Janice has been volunteering with The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre for eight years. She comes in every other Friday and fills when she’s available and there’s a need.

Janice was on the lookout for a charity to support and was attracted to Pickering, as the help we provide struck a chord.

“I saw a family member who lived down in Devon struggling with no support and it was very isolating,” Janice explains. “I could see how much Pickering does for everyone who walks through the door – not just the person with cancer but their friends and family too. I wish there were more centres like this across the country to help even more people.”

She says many of our first time visitors find that initial walk through our door quite daunting.

“A while ago, one lady came during her lunch hour,” Janice adds. “She was upset and it had taken her a lot of courage to ring our bell but, after just that short period before returning to work, she had a smile on her face. Over the years, I’ve chatted to some wonderful visitors and a few I first met eight years still sometimes pop in for a cup of tea and a chat, which is lovely. I’ve also made friends with other volunteers and it always gives me a lift to be able to help others.”
